Alert: Questions about Homemade and Diluted Formula

As the infant shortage continues, we are getting more questions about diluting baby formula or making your own homemade baby formula. MFHS reminds our participants that both practices are dangerous and should not be attempted. Watering down formula to stretch is out is not safe. It can cause nutritional imbalances in your baby and lead to serious health problems. Always mix formula as directed by the manufacturer. And while recipes for homemade formulas are circulating online and may seem healthy or less expensive, they are not safe and do not meet your baby’s nutritional needs. Infant deaths have been reported from some use of homemade formula.

You can learn more about both practices and why they shouldn’t be attempted at this American Academy of Pediatrics website. Please contact your WIC office with questions and review all of the substitute formulas available below to find an option for your child.

Safeguarding Infant Health during the Recall

The recall is an important measure to safeguard infants from exposure to Cronobacter and Salmonella, bacteria that could impact infant health and development.

Parents and caregivers of infants who have already used recalled infant formula products and have concerns about the health of their child should contact the child’s healthcare provider.

Tips for Families who use formula:

  1. Medical providers recommend that families turn to other regulated infant formulas that are not part of the recall.   WIC is helping with this.
  2. The FDA cautions that other options, such as homemade formula  can lead to serious error and could result in harm to infants.   The American Academy of Pediatrics also cautions against homemade infant formulas
  3. The FDA and the American Academy of Pediatrics also caution against over dilution of formula in an effort to stretch supplies.   This is a very dangerous and potentially fatal practice
  4. If families need infant formula immediately due to limited or lack of stock in grocery stores, food banks are another possible option. Feeding America has a network of 200 food banks and 60,000 food pantries and meal programs across the country. Many Feeding America network food banks provide free baby food, formula, and non-food staples such as diapers, toilet paper, and more. Click here to locate the closest Feeding America food bank near you.

WIC participants can visit www.similacrecall.com or call 1-800-986-8540 to find out if your formula has been recalled.

Recalled infant formula can be returned to the grocery store.
