January Is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month
January is typically the time when people across the world put a renewed emphasis on their health and try to improve their well being. This might include exercising or changing your eating habits, but there is another important piece of health that many women might be forgetting. January is designated as cervical cancer awareness month in order to help remind women everywhere that it’s important to get a Pap test to check for cervical cancer.
Approximately 11,000 American women will learn they have cervical cancer this year, and nearly 4,000 will die from an advanced form of the disease. Getting a Pap test is a critical tool in checking for early signs of HPV and cervical cancer. If caught early enough, cervical cancer is often a very preventable disease. This is why it’s important this January to not only schedule your own Pap test, but encourage all the women in your life to get tested as well.
Maternal & Family Health Services offers a full range of reproductive health services, including Pap tests. We are proud to offer low cost and free screenings and diagnostic services for cervical and breast cancer through the PA HealthyWoman program. If you know someone who needs a Pap test but hasn’t been able to afford one, you can get one scheduled by calling 1.877.MAMMO.4.U to speak with our HealthyWoman coordinator, or you can visit the MFHS website for more information.
Save a life and get your Pap test done this January!
