Nutrition Education beyond the traditional WIC Encounter

MFHS is collaborating with primary care physicians and private foundations to implement Healthy Habits Together: Pediatric Weight Management Medical Nutrition Therapy Program. This prepares MFHS for the changes we can expect with implementation of the Affordable Care Act and the potential for expansion of nutrition education and breastfeeding expertise beyond the traditional WIC encounter.

With start up funding from the Northeast Pennsylvania Health Care Foundation, MFHS is launching this family-centric plan that will provide low-income children and adolescents with one –on-one comprehensive nutrition counseling, education and tools to improve eating habits and activity behaviors.

WIC is the catalyst for childhood obesity prevention, and Medical Nutrition Therapy beyond the WIC encounter is the next phase in prevention for an underserved Medicaid –eligible population. The Healthy Habits Program includes Electronic Medical Record system alerts for physicians to refer children within the required age and BMI limits.
