Fruits & Veggies At The Farmers Market

One of the unique benefits of being in the WIC program comes during the summer and fall, when farmer’s markets open up around all around Pennsylvania. Fresh fruit, vegetables, flowering plants, baked goods and more are available direct from the farmers themselves. A trip to the farmers market is a healthy, educational and fun experience for everyone in the community. It also supports the local economy and helps local farmers thrive. But did you know that families on the WIC program can get even more out of their local market?
Some WIC participants can actually get coupons for fresh produce through the Farmers Market Nutrition Program. Each year, the PA Department of Agriculture will determine which categories of WIC participant are eligible for the Farmers Market Nutrition Program. Right now, pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum women, and children ages 2 to WIC eligible 5 year olds qualify. They will get a set of vouchers for fresh fruit and vegetables in late May or June that the majority of the vendors at their local market will accept. The vouchers are good all the way through the end of the farmer’s market in November, so you can use them on a variety of foods.
If you’re attending your local farmers market and would like to use your WIC vouchers, simply look for the sign at the stand:

The beauty of the farmers market is it allows us to learn more about where our food comes from, and to cook healthy, natural meals with locally grown produce.  If you’re a WIC participant who is interested in the Farmers Market Nutrition Program, ask your WIC staff for more information. We have a list of farmer’s market locations where you can use your WIC vouchers.
